As Italian names go, is Velia particularly uncommon? I can’t imagine someone thinking, “Maria? Could it be that Maria?” Although, if it is a love/crush thing, that wouldn’t stop some guys from thinking that. TMI: As a lad, I majored in ‘Debbie’ and minored in ‘Chris’ for girlfriends. When I hear those names, I guess I still flinch a bit.
Neil — the name “Velia” is not common at all — that’s why I chose it. (My friend told me that she knows someone with the name, and that this woman was thrilled to see her name being used in a comic strip because she rarely sees it anywhere.) So yeah, it’s pretty uncommon. Also, it’s interesting to note that, in Italian “Velia” has its roots in the meaning of being “veiled” or hidden. This was another reason I chose the name — my character’s true character would unfold as I developed the strip — thus “unveiling” her.
Sorry for you that “Debbie” and “Chris” are all too common, and so you have to hear them now and then!
I’ll bet he’s a former crush or he had a crush on her when they were kids…
