I really like that Velia is standing up to Sister Brigida and her antics, but I may be a bit confused. Wasn’t it Nancy who asked the sister to show up to spy on Vel? Why would she be so concerned about her, unless she’s terrified of Vel learning about her setting this all up? Or am I just misremembering it that badly?
Either way, I love the dichotomy of your two strips. Tina accepts the indignities of her world with as much grace as possible, while Velia takes almost no guff at all. I doubt the two women would ever be good friends, yet I find both to be adorable!
Neil — You’ll notice within the next few strips that for Nancy it’s a case of “You got more than you paid for.” Nancy thought the nun would straighten Velia out in conventional ways… ie, enforce church visits, talking to her about sinning, try to discourage dating Lou, etc (what anyone would expect a nun’s methods to be) –Without wanting Vel to know that that’s what the Sister’s visit is all about, of course. She had no idea that Brigida would be going to extremes: wiring the house, spying (and then lying to her about it), and so she’s a little suspicious about the whole matter, too. Hope I’ve cleared it up (but of course, things will unfold soon, and you’ll see it all yourself!)
… and yes, Tina and Vel certainly don’t take life the same way!
